Media Democracy Fund seeks a bold, creative leader to join the team as Manager of Research and Training. This is an opportunity to develop and shape research, monitoring and training on one of the most pressing issues of our time: addressing disinformation targeting communities of color.
Media Democracy Fund (MDF), a project within New Venture Fund (NVF), is a catalyst for an open, secure, and equitable internet. MDF brings together diverse voices to design inclusive and responsible solutions and empower public interest advocates to create an environment where digital technologies and the internet have a long-term, positive impact on society.
Reporting to MDF’s Director of Programs, the Manager of Research and Training will work as the project lead to develop and execute a monitoring plan for tracking and categorizing examples of information disorder and provide regular analytical briefs on key topics to the Disinformation Defense League. They will lead the research team in online monitoring and analysis of sites and communities that develop or amplify online disinformation, and create training materials to educate members in the best practices for combating mis- and disinformation and liaise with other communications experts on best practices in counter-messaging.
As an integral member of MDF’s team, the Manager of Research and Training will play a crucial role in the following areas:
Research and Monitoring
Lead monitoring and analysis efforts, producing regular briefings, presentations and other materials for the Disinfo Defense League turning research and analysis into practical guidance.
Interact with social listening tools daily,including keywords, query parameters and dashboards. Refine query parameter setup to ensure accurate and insightful analysis, and interpret data including volume, sentiment, conversation drivers, influencers, etc.
Liaise with league members to increase DDL’s profile through conversation geared towards disinformation research and training in best practices.
Spearhead research and analysis of both qualitative and quantitative data to produce deliverables in written, spoken and video form, and integrate research findings into a wide variety of application materials.
Create and edit reporting deliverables that transform social data into a clear story, complete with charts, tables and infographics, and actionable insights based on concrete data.
Disseminate research findings to diverse audiences through written reports and in-person presentations.
Prioritize and drive research and communicate findings to stakeholders. Make research findings convincing and actionable for both research experts and non-experts.
Training and Best Practices
Lead the research and training team in the development, curation and design of training materials.
Represent MDF and DDL at in-person conferences to train on standards and recommended practices.
Qualifications of the Ideal Candidate
While no one candidate will embody all the qualifications enumerated below, the ideal candidate will possess many of the following professional and personal abilities, attributes, and experiences:
Depth of knowledge in the field of disinformation in online spaces, particularly in communities of color.
High-level experience of using anonymous forums and web platforms (e.g. Discord, 4Chan, 8Chan)
Advanced understanding of digital verification and open source investigation techniques.
Mastery of online monitoring, social listening tools and processes.
Mastery of the standards and practices associated with the responsible handling of mis- and disinformation.
Computational skills, particularly knowledge and experience of using Python (PANDAS)
Mastery of communicating and translating training materials to broad audiences.
Salary and Benefits
The compensation range for this role is $80,000 - $90,000 depending on experience. Additionally, a comprehensive benefits package includes 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance, 3% employer match on 401k contributions, pre-tax transportation benefits, and paid holidays, vacation, sick, and volunteer time off.
