Note: This call took place on July 2nd, 2013. If you are interested in receiving updates from MDF about surveillance or any of our other issue areas, please contact us directly.
Since June 6th, an escalating series of revelations about massive secret US government surveillance of phone and Internet records has raised questions about the privacy and security of millions of individuals around the world. As funders of civil society, it is our responsibility to consider the consequences of such a program in all of our areas of interest.
How does this dragnet-style data collection affect our grantees and their work? When is it worth trading individual privacy for national security, and who decides? How can the government be held accountable while acting in secret, on classified court orders? How has civil society responded to these revelations, and what can be done to safeguard privacy and human rights in the face of such an enormous government surveillance program? How can we best prepare our grantees (and ourselves) for working in this rapidly changing environment?
The Media Democracy Fund, Ford Foundation and Open Society Foundations invite you to join us for a funders-only briefing on July 2nd at 11:00 AM Eastern (GMT -5). We will hear from experts engaging directly with these issues, and will have an opportunity to discuss responses from US-based and international public interest and human rights groups.
This briefing call is for funders from all issue areas, and we encourage you to distribute this invitation across your networks. Thank you for your help.
