Wendy Carillo was a major advocate for GOTV efforts throughout 2008. “I was excited to see young Latinos register and go vote for the very first time,” she said.
We motivated people as young as 18 to register online through Voto Latino, the nonpartisan voter-registration group. Their informative text messages and reminders were awesome. Young people text friends and family all the time, so this just seemed so normal.
Wendy and other volunteers reached many of the 68 percent of new young Latino voters participating in the 2008 election, according to Maria Teresa Petersen, executive director of Voto Latino. The Pew Hispanic Center expects the trend to continue: Approximately 50,000 Latinos turn 18 each month – making this fast-growing segment of the U.S. population critical to civic engagement efforts.
